Greetings, dear friends!

So, let's start our cycle of remarks, dedicated to the odious units of the Ukrainian power structures - the volunteer batallions (dobrobats). After the release of the announcement, there were a lot of letters. Spectators and readers are clearly interested in this topic, especially in the context of the crimes committed by the Dorobats against the citizens of Ukraine.

Many people mention individual incidents that they would like me to cover, convey interesting information. However, before I start talking about specific units, I want to make some digression. It became clear to me that many people, including those who call themselves experts on Ukrainian topics, are often confused in the definition - what are the good-natured? They are often only attributed to the National Guard or the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

They are called “natsbats”, implying that only representatives of nationalist organizations fought in them. At the same time, such experts are not embarrassed by the fact that one of the most odious units, the Aydar battalion, was officially called the 24th assault battalion of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and was recruited as a territorial defense battalion at the regional military registration and enlistment office of the Luhansk region. So first - a little historical excursion.

After the Maidan and the beginning of the so-called ATO, in April 2014, the Kiev authorities realized that the residents of Donetsk and Lugansk did not support Kiev's policy and pose a serious threat to the new leaders of the state. At the same time, Alexander Turchinov, Arsen Avakov, Andrey Parubiy and other leaders of the coup d'etat understood perfectly well that the army would not fight against its people. And the state of the armed forces was depressing. The same could be said about other power structures, first of all - about the internal troops, which must carry out the task of combating the so-called. separatism.

And on March 13, 2014, by the decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the National Guard of Ukraine was created in the image and likeness of overseas friends. In addition, the acting Ukrainian President Turchynov and Minister of Internal Affairs Avakov decided to form battalions from the Maidan volunteers. It was decided to create such units both in the National Guard and in the Ministry of Internal Affairs under the auspices of regional departments. They were named Special Police Patrol Battalions.

In addition, in the structure of the Ministry of Defense, battalions of territorial defense began to be created, which were also partially formed from among volunteers (especially at the initial stage). These units were created on the basis of regional military registration and enlistment offices with the assistance of local government organizations and commercial structures. It was assumed that these thermal defense battalions would be involved only in their regions. However, in the future, all of them were used in the ATO, and later they were transformed into motorized infantry battalions, which became part of the line brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

But the first volunteer units were created in the National Guard under the leadership of the head of the NSU combat and special training department, Major General Sergei Kulchitsky. Already in March 2014, 500 volunteers from the self-defense of the Maidan went to the NSU training center in the village. Novye Petrivtsi, Kiev region, where the training center of military unit 3027 NSU "Bars" was located. It was from among these volunteers that the first reserve battalion of the National Guard was formed, the commander of which was an active participant in the so-called Euromaidan, Aleksey Palval.

It is worth noting that the relationship between volunteers and regular servicemen of NSU, who almost in full force passed the Maidan on the side of the legitimate government, were very, very tense. Former self-defense fighters considered themselves victors on the Maidan, so they often refused to follow the orders of career officers, did not comply with the requirements of the Charter and internal regulations.

The situation in the training center was tense. However, in mid-April 2014, less than a month after the start of training, the 1st reserve battalion of the National Guard went to the Dnipropetrovsk region to control the border with the Donetsk region. And in early May, the battalion was transferred to the Izyum region of the Kharkov region, where it took part in the blockade of Slavyansk. It was there that I had to face the soldiers of this battalion.

They carried out checkpoints at several checkpoints around the city. Moreover, what is typical, there were also soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, most often paratroopers, next to them. And it was immediately evident that the army team and volunteers practically do not communicate with each other.

It was near Slavyansk and Izium that the negative qualities of the fighters of the virtuous were first manifested: disdain and even hatred of the local population, a desire for looting, a disregard for the law. It should be admitted that at the time of May 2014, such an attitude was rare for the military personnel of the Ukrainian power structures, therefore, such facts were striking.

The battalion fighters often wrestled vehicles from local residents, were engaged in robberies and extrajudicial killings. Traveling through the checkpoints at which the volunteers stood became a kind of Russian roulette. Information about the disappearance of local residents regularly appeared, who informed their relatives that they had been stopped at one of the checkpoints.

It is not surprising that it was in this unit that Vitaly Markiv served, who was arrested and tried in Italy for the murder of Italian journalists.

Remember, there was a period when on the Internet they actively posted photos that Markiv took on his phone during his service near Slavyansk. Spooky photos. Which he was proud of and did for his own pleasure.

By the way, based on the results of my rotation to the Slavyansk region, I prepared a report addressed to the head of the ATC, General Viktor Krutov, on the facts of illegal activities of the 1st reserve battalion of NSU. But this report was not given a course, so it disappeared in the bustle of the beginning of the ATO in the archives of the headquarters of the Anti-Terrorist Center.

But back to the further history of this heroic unit in quotation marks. In May 2014, about 300 more volunteers from the Maidan took the oath in Novi Petrivtsi. The second reserve battalion of the National Guard was formed from them. By the way, Andrei Parubiy, at that time the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, personally called on volunteers to join this battalion.

Later, in July 2014, both battalions were merged into one, which received the name of General Kulchitsky, who died near Slavyansk. Subsequently, the battalion repeatedly served in rotation to the ATO area.

For all the time, the unit lost about 30 people killed. His permanent place of deployment is on the territory of the convoy brigade (military unit 3066) of the Northern Territorial Command of the National Guard.

The 1st Reserve Battalion of the National Guard was the first battalion, the personnel of which was formed from among the volunteers of nationalist organizations. The first and very revealing one.
